Learning to Read and Reading to Learn

We want all of the children in our school to become confident, fluent and accurate readers. To do this they must learn the strategies needed to quickly recognise the words in a sentence and develop their language comprehension skills. They need to learn to:

  • Blend sound together smoothly
  • Recognise instantly some high usage ‘tricky’ words
  • Understand the role of punctuation within a sentence
  • Recognise pattern and rhyme in words
  • Simultaneously understand what they are reading about

We believe that high quality multisensory teaching using a system of synthetic phonics is the best tool we can use, the best approach for all children, including those who have a difficulty like dyslexia.

Synthetic phonics teacher letter/sound correspondence at a quick pace and immediately teaches how to blend sounds for reading, c-a-t becomes cat and b-oa-t becomes boat.

Using a system called ‘Letters and Sounds’ children in the foundation stage and key stage one have daily phonics lessons in small groups to develop these key skills.

In Year One the children undertake a national phonics screening check to assess whether they have learnt phonic decoding to the required standard and have mastered competent word reading skills. There will still be children who require explicit direct teaching and this is provided through the use of quality interventions as they move through the school.

We are lucky to have a wide range of phonic based books to develop children's reading; these include Jelly and Bean and Songbirds.  We also have a range of non-phonic reading books from the Oxford Reading Tree range and many many more.
